Event in South Park Gardens

The Friends of South Park Gardens is a registered charity, working for the restoration and improvement of the gardens for the benefit of the community.

The Friends Group was set up after a public meeting in 2002, following the theft of a set of ornamental gates from the Gardens. For many people this was the last straw, as the Gardens had been suffering from neglect and were attracting vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Since then the Friends have been lobbying the Council for improvements, running fundraising events and raising the profile of the Gardens. The Council and the Friends collaborated on undertaking a feasibility study to restore and improve the Gardens and applied for a grant to the Heritage Lottery Fund. After a number of years’ hard work a grant of just over £1m was achieved.
